Continental GP 4000s II (£49.95)
The ever-popular Continental 4000S II race tyres have set a benchmark for quality and Conti offer them in a wide range of sizes, from 20mm to 28mm, as well as a 23mm 650c version, too.
They’re made from the German company’s BlackChili compound, designed to combine minimal rolling resistance with plenty of durability for high mileage riders, alongside excellent wet weather performance.
Puncture protection is handled by the Vectran Breaker, a layer of semicrystalline material that sits just underneath the rubber and wards off anything that manages to break through the surface of the tyre.
The 28mm version weigh in at a claimed 260g per tyre, and they’re aimed as all-rounders; light enough that you could race on them, but durable enough that you won’t be repairing punctures every kilometre when you’re out training, with the additional volume of the wider tyre boosting comfort and providing a more stable footprint.
If you’re after something training-specific and highly puncture resistant from Conti, check out the 4-Seasons, which now comes in up to 32mm.
