How do the demands of winter riding differ to summer?
Of course, it’s important to keep your chain clean and well-lubed year-round, but the demands placed on your equipment – and, in turn, your cleaning schedule! – are more significant in winter.
“Keeping your chain clean and lubed is incredibly important, especially over the winter months when there is a lot of salt and dirt on the roads, which can corrode and rust your chain,” says Sampson.
“Winter riding can be really enjoyable with the right clothing, tyres and lights. It can be more demanding due to excess water and mud or ice on the roads, however due care and proper route planning and bike maintenance can really help. Some riders change to mountain bikes, cyclo-cross or older, heavier winter bikes but they still need to be cleaned and maintained to last you the season.”
The specific demands of winter riding also mean it’s particularly important to select the right choice of lube in order to keep your chain running as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
With that in mind, and with a wide choice of lubes available, which should you use in winter?
