Tyre levers
Tyre levers will help you get a tyre off the rim in the event of a puncture. We prefer plastic levers as they’re less likely to damage the rim and a good lever will be strong but flexible.
Most cyclists will need tyre levers to lift the tyre off the rim in order to remove an inner tube but it’s best to use your thumbs to get the tyre back on. It can be tricky, particularly on the final few inches of the tyre, but persevere as using tyre levers can damage the inner tube and risk a pinch flat. That said, when it’s cold, dark and your hands are frozen, tyre levers will do the job much quicker.
