Bleeding Shimano’s R785 hydraulic disc brake for road bikes

Removing air from the Japanese component giant's new fluid-operated stoppers

Step four – adding fluid to the system

Fill the syringe supplied with the bleed kit with mineral oil. A complete system requires only 20cc of oil to operate, but Shimano’s mechanic used more to flush the system of air. Fluid pushed through the system into the funnel can be used again, but only when installing the system: ‘used’ fluid will have a black or grey appearance and should be replaced. Shimano’s bleed kit is supplied with a clamp that prevents air from entering the syringe through the hose.

Attach the syringe hose to the caliper bleed nipple and gently introduce oil into the system

Unscrew the bleed nipple on the caliper with a 7mm spanner. Attach the syringe hose to the  bleed nipple and push oil into the system. Oil should be introduced slowly. Shimano’s mechanic filled only half of the syringe before attaching it to the caliper.
