7Mesh G2 short sleeve jersey – review

Simple but effective short-sleeve jersey, which can also be used when layering up in autumn

In a marketplace saturated by multi-panelled, jargon-fuelled cycling jerseys, claiming to perform in groundbreaking ways, the 7Mesh G2 short sleeve jersey is a breath of fresh air. Taking things back to basics, the jersey is cut from one type of fabric, with a close, considered fit and practical features to deliver day-long comfort.

The G2 is made from a 100 per cent polyester fabric, and feels excellent when put on. It’s different from the mesh style fabric which seems to be the norm these days, following a more natural pattern. Plenty of stretch aids the good fit and non-restrictive movement offered by the jersey.

The cut is somewhere between cafe and racer, and ‘mechanically textured fibers’ – essentially little fabric springs – means the stretch offers a great fit, but avoids sagging when the pockets are full. It’s not baggy but it’s also not tight.

It is much drier, lighter and more adaptable across temperature changes compared to other jerseys we’ve tested – bang on for UK riding – and uses clever cuts and stitching to keep hems to a minimum. There’s also a claimed UPF50 protection from the sun, which certainly held true on a hot, sunny six-hour ride.

Speaking of which, with a full-length zipper the 7Mesh G2 jersey is ideal for warmer weather but the fabric – while not windproof in itself – also means the jersey is an ideal option when layering up through autumn.

It is worth noting the texture of the fabric is slightly unusual, however. It wasn’t a problem for us, it feels fine and is not irritable, but it is different and may not be to everybody’s tastes. Then again, wearing a base layer alleviates that problem to a large degree.

At the back, there are the standard three pockets, which have pocket guards to prevent spillage and allow you to tuck tools etc behind the flap. There are also two zipped pockets either side, which allowed for easy threading of headphones, and reflective details for added visibility.

The sleeves, meanwhile, are simple affairs – no elastic panels or elasticated hems, just a simple turned up well-finished fabric. They fit well, like the rest of the jersey, sitting just over my bicep. The neckline is also comfortable and well-finished.

The versatile jersey is good for warm weather rides, but could also be used – with extra layers – through autumn thanks to the slightly thicker fabric

Conclusion

With a simple style (the jersey is available in black, white and the green we tested), great fit and the option to use it alone in warm weather or when layering in spring/autumn, the 7Mesh G2 jersey is well worth looking at.

Pros

  • Excellent, comfortable fit – not baggy, but not too tight either
  • Adaptable for use in different temperatures

Cons

  • Not many that we could find, though the fabric may not suit everyone
