It may a seem long time ago since Niki Terpstra was racing to Paris-Roubaix victory, and Sir Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas – both top ten finishers – made us giddy with optimism for 2015.

But the 2014 cobbled Classics season was certainly one to live long in the memory after a series of intriguing battles on the pavé of Belgium and northern France.

The Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, perhaps the biggest one-day races on the WorldTour calendar – present a challenge like no other to teams and bike manufacturers as they look to equip their riders for the bone-shaking cobbles.

It can bring out the best in innovation as the balance between stiffness, comfort, weight and aerodynamics is juggled and this year was no exception, particularly with a cobbled stage of the Tour de France to consider, too.
