dhb Aeron Speed short sleeve jersey – review

Lightweight, breathable summer jersey but a little short at the back

The first thing that struck me about the Aeron Speed short sleeve jersey from dhb, Wiggle’s in-house clothing brand, is just how light the jersey is. It’s almost not there. The result is a good jersey for warm weather riding, but not without its niggles.

Visually it’s particularly striking, with a bold, bright and geometric design. There are two colour ways available, with a light blue and black with orange option alongside the navy blue, black and green version tested.

The dhb range is split into six collections, with the Aeron line-up sitting below the top-level ASV kit, and described as being “refined for high performance.” As you’d expect based on that description, the fit is slim and figure-hugging, generally more so than dhb’s more affordable kit, or “sleek and aero” as dhb describe it.

The combination of a lightweight fabric and mesh underarm panels make the dhb Aeron Speed short sleeve jersey a good choice for warm weather riding

While the jersey was predominantly tested in typical UK spring weather, where it was paired with a warm base layer, give me a Spanish mountain in the summer and I’d be reaching for this jersey – it breathes excellently and the fabric wicks sweat away quickly. It’s not a jersey for cool or wet days, but for a fast spring spin, or a hot summer’s day, it’s a great choice.

In an attempt to simulate higher temps, I also did a few turbo sessions in the jersey, and it does definitely work well in warmer temperatures, wicking well, and due to the lightweight fabric, helped keep me relatively comfortable.

The jersey is a mix of spandex and polyester, with an anti-bacterial treatment to help the fabric stay fresher on hot rides, which is another indication as to the its leaning towards warm weather riding. As I mentioned as the top, the jersey is very light, and the low density of the fabric helps keep things cool, along with the mesh side panels.

Out riding, the fit is close but not restrictive, The spandex in the main fabric and the under arm mesh panels adds some stretch into the jersey and that helps to keep things comfortable.

The jersey’s a little short at the back and we’d happily lose the Aeron Speed logo

There’s a lot to like about the jersey but there are a couple of niggles. It could be a touch longer at the bottom as it has a slight tendency to ride up when riding, unless the pockets are loaded. The silicone gripper which runs along the hem doesn’t really help in that regard. Chances are you’ll ride with some sort of weight in the pockets but it could do with being extended all the same.

The visuals of the jersey might not suit everyone, but while it’s quite bold, it’s not too busy. However, while the subtle dhb logo on the front is in keeping with the style, the large Aeron Speed logo on the back is a bit unnecessary.

Conclusion

All things considered, the dhb Aeron Speed short sleeve jersey is a good summer option, thanks to the close fit and breathable fabric, and underlines dhb’s reputation for fair value. However, the length’s not quite right and, while not a deal breaker, is something to watch out for could be improved.

Pros

  • Lightweight, breathable fabric
  • Close, aero fit
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • A little short at the back
