The dhb merino short sleeve base layer offers a close, comfortable fit and a decent level of insulation.
We’ve worn it in temperatures as low as five degrees below a soft shell jacket, and in temperatures only slightly warmer with a short-sleeved jersey and arm warmers. In both settings we felt it made a notable contribution to a comfortable core temperature.
What merino gains over polyester in insulation, it typically cedes in its ability to wick and move moisture. dhb’s offering performed no worse than others we’ve tried, and didn’t leave us feeling clammy. While a synthetic base layer is likely to move moisture more effectively, it’s also likely to be less insulating, and at this time of year, insulation wins hands down, for this correspondent at least.
Like all base layers, dhb’s merino short sleeve base layer is a simple, t-shirt style garment: a no-frills item with an important task. We’re happy to report that it met its brief. The fit was close around the body and at the sleeve, and so the inclusion of flatlock seams was well-judged. The round neck was unobtrusive, and we didn’t feel restricted by the sleeves. The fine merino wool reduced bulk, making it a comfortable fit beneath jerseys only slightly larger (typically the Cafe du Cycliste Josette jersey, also under test).
Conclusion
The dhb Merino Short Sleeve Base Layer offers all of the qualities we’ve come to expect from this staple of the cyclist’s wardrobe. It won’t replace our ‘go to’ merino base layer, Rapha’s superb offering, but it’s half the price and offers all but the luxurious feel. If you’re seeking an affordable and insulating base layer this winter, dhb’s merino offering is worth considering.
