Excellent shorts for less than £60

A good pair of bib shorts needn’t cost a fortune and these Endura Hyperon bib shorts prove that, impressing both in terms of performance and fit, with reasonable £59.99 price tag to boot.

Built from a typical arrangement of six panels, all fairly traditional in shape and construction, these shorts have become a regular go-to option for most riding duties. They have a workhorse feel to them, but don’t feel too heavy nor too basic – they are just a very functional pair of shorts, which work just as you’d want them to.

The lower half of the shorts are made from a relatively light fabric which ensures they are comfortable in warmer weather, while the upper half is constructed from a mesh weave, which helps to improve ventilation under a jersey and with a base layer beneath. The fabric is also fast-wicking and offers UPF50+ protection – handy for long summer days out or when riding abroad.

The fit is excellent and ensures these are a comfortable pair of shorts. They are well finished and have flat-locked seams, which adds to the general feeling of robustness and quality. Out riding, I has to keep reminding myself to ‘feel’ the shorts or keep an eye out for any glitches, such is the quality of the fit and how natural the shorts feel.

The Endura 500-Series chamois is designed to offer good ventilation and reduce heat build-up – and in use it’s a really effective pad. It’s comfortable, with a low stack, and felt good to go from the first ride. There have been no issues with chaffing and it moves well while riding out of the saddle.

Endura have used a wide, elastic gripper on each leg which, combined with the red silicone print on the inside, prevents any issues with the shorts riding up or moving.

These are fairly traditional shorts as far as looks are concerned, there’s not much to shout out from the outside other than a white seam running up each leg. The reflective logos and tabs on the rear of either leg should be well-placed to catch light and hopefully a driver’s attention. It’s not much more than most shorts would provide but, combined with the excellent quality and good price, mean these shorts are handy for general commuting duties, as well as weekend riding.

Conclusion

The Endura Hyperon bib shorts are great value for money. They may be a no-frills option but they tick the most important boxes when it comes to cycling shorts – they’re fairly lightweight, have an excellent fit, a comfortable chamois, and provide completely reliable performance which belies the price tag.
