Exposure Strada 800 front light

First-class front lamp now features Day Bright setting

Exposure have been putting out great bike lights for some time now. In fact, regular readers of the RCUK 100 will have seen Exposure lights in each of the past two editions.

We rated the previous iteration of the Exposure Strada among our 100 best products back in 2015, while the Exposure Sirius Mk4 – one of the best commuter lights on the market – was selected for last year’s RCUK 100.

Now, new for 2017, Exposure have taken a leaf out of Bontrager’s book and added day bright settings to many of their first-class lights, including this, the Exposure Strada 800.

The thinking is simple – Exposure say 80 per cent of all cycling-related accidents happen during daylight hours, and the Day Bright setting claims visibility of more than a kilometre away. By adopting a day-specific pulse pattern, Exposure believe they have found a way of ‘cutting through the visual noise’ or, in other words, getting you seen.

Day Bright aside, the Strada, has always been a superb road light and has a host of settings, with solid and flashing beam patterns, and run times ranging from three hours to 36 hours.

With a maximum output of 800 lumens, it’s more than bright enough for fast training rides on unlit rides, while at the other end of the spectrum, it’s also up to the task of acting as a commuting lamp in the urban jungle. It’s not a particularly compact unit, owing to the integrated (and USB rechargeable) battery, but for the range of settings and build quality, it’s hard to beat.

The Strada 800 also benefits from a targeted road-specific pattern, so you’re not blinding other road users. Essentially, it works like car headlights, by offering high and dipped beam patterns to light the road without overpowering everyone else.

The Strada has been refined over the years and now has an an easy-to-read visual display on the rear, which clearly indicates remaining burn time and the light’s status. The quick-release bracket also makes it easy to remove the main unit when not in use.

Exposure Strada

Exposure now also offer two versions of the Strada. As well as this 800-lumen light, there’s a more expensive 1,200-lumen version, but we reckon the 800 is the better option for general road riding.

We can’t disguise the fact £236.20 is a lot to pay for a front light, but Exposure’s lights are exceptionally well designed, not only in their functionality but the build. The Strada 800 has a quality CNC-machined aluminium casing and the features, including that beam pattern and the LED display, are second-to-none.
