The Fizik Arione 00 saddle is the Italian manufacturer’s flagship offering, released to celebrate 10 years of the model.
We first encountered it at its launch at Eurobike this September, where it was unveiled as the lightest of five new models.
Fizik claim a weight of 135 grams for the 00; it tipped our scales at 140 grams, but even with the discrepancy, it’s seriously light. At £299.99, it’s also a serious investment.
The Italian manufacturer has included many of its patented technologies in the Arione 00: Wingflex (lateral flexibility), Twinflex (a multi-directional carbon lay up for the saddle’s outer edge, and a bi-directional carbon-kevlar weave for its inner structure) and a Mobius carbon rail (one fashioned from carbon fibre braids).
It’s also designed in line with Fizik’s “spine concept” principle i.e that a rider’s flexibility or lack of determines their position on the saddle, and so its shape. Those with the greatest flexibility, Fizik describe as ‘snakes’ (Mark Cavendish among them), and direct towards their Arione range.
The cover is one of two halves, finishes Fizik describe as “matt black” and “gummy black”: what looks like vinyl on the right hand side and a microfibre on the left. Fizik’s man in the UK assures us the divide is purely aesthetic and serves no technical function.
