Hoy launch Alto Irpavi disc brake road bike

New launch from Sir Chris Hoy's brand features disc brakes, thru-axles and three different models for 2016

Hoy Bikes, the eponymous brand of one Sir Chris Hoy (you may have heard of him) are back for 2016 with a new range, the headline of which is the Alto Irpavi, a disc-equipped road bike.

Strange as the name might seem, the Alto Irpavi follows the brand’s trend of naming their models after places of significance in the career of their founder. Alto Irpavi is the location, in La Paz, Bolivia, of the world’s highest velodrome where Hoy travelled in 2007 in an attempt to break the world kilometre record. He fell achingly short, coming up 0.005 seconds short of Arnaud Tournant’s mark, but followed that up by breaking the 500m world record.

The disc-equipped Alto Irpavi is new from Sir Chris Hoy’s bike brand for 2016

Anyway the new bike, far from being a pared down track-ready kilo killer, is actually a disc brake-ready road bike. More than that, though, it’s remarkably forward-looking, paring those disc brakes with thru-axles front and rear.

Frame, like the rest of the Hoy range, continues to be alloy, with this one being triple-butted 6066 aluminium pared to a full carbon fork. Hoy say that the focus with the bike has been on stiffness-to-weight ratio rather than all out low weight and they’ve come up with a design that they think will suit all kinds of riders.

Another nod in that direction are the comfort-focused elements in the design. Disc brakes mean that they’ve been able to build the seatstays with out a cross-bridge, allowing for greater flexibility, and the walls on the frame tubing have been kept thin to allow for a little more compliance.

The headtube is on the tall side, making for a more relaxed riding position, although the chainstays have been kept shorter in an attempt to keep the same fast handling quality as the Sa Calobra road bike.

With disc brakes and thru-axles front and back, the Alto Irpavi is not only futureproof, it’s helping to blaze a new trail for road bikes

Hoy have three specs planned for the Alto Irpavi. The first is the 002 which comes with a Shimano 105 11-speed drivetrain paired to a FSA Gossamer crankset and RS505 disc brakes all of which will set you back £1,300.

Next up is the 003 which upgrades to a full Shimano 105 group and RS685 hydraulic disc brakes for £1,500, and the top model – the 004 – Is full Shimano Ultegra and RS505 hydraulic disc brakes for £1,800. All of these come with Shimano’s 140mm rotors. The top-of-the-range bike also gets a good-looking set of tubeless-ready Novatec CXD wheels, which are definitely a cut above the standard fare offered on bikes at this price range.

If you fancy the look of one of these, you’ll have to wait a bit as the Alto Irpavi is due to land in February 2016. When they do land, they’ll be available through Evans Cycles, as is the rest of the Hoy range.
