Campagnolo make a lot of wheelsets. If you check out their website, you’ll probably be surprised at their range given that their reputation was made on the quality of their groupsets.
But their wheels have a superb reputation as well, and we’re very keen to see how this Italian-made set of upgrade wheels fairs when we put it to the test.
The Eurus wheels come in at £667.99 and Campag pitch them as a versatile model that can be ridden on any type of course. During the pre-test weigh-in our test set definitely raised a few eyebrows as they came in well under Campag’s claimed weight of 1,465g. Ours were 1,423g, a saving of 42g. That might not seem like a lot, but when so many wheels we see come in over the claimed weight, something like this is a real treat.
Feature-wise, the Eurus use a lot of Campag’s smartest tricks. The Mega-G3 system at the back is Campag’s own rear wheel spoke pattern that claims to enhance lateral rigidity while taking some of the stress off the spokes. Basically, there are twice as many spokes on the drive side of the wheel, to make up for the extra stress that comes from the cassette being mounted on that side.
Another balancing system Campag employ is dubbed Dynamic Balance. When a valve – either from an inner tube or a tubeless valve – is fitted, one side of the wheel becomes slightly heavier than the other. So what the Italians have done to counterbalance this is increase rim weight proportionally directly across from the valve hole, as well as making the two spokes opposite thicker, which should redress the balance and make the wheel roll better.
The Eurus wheels also come in what Campag call ‘2-way’ fit. It’s their way of saying the wheelset is tubeless compatible, and you can mounted either tubless tyres with sealant or standard clinchers with tubes. Our test set are the standard clincher version but the 2-way fit ready wheels will set you back £697.99.
We’ll be getting in plenty of miles on these over the coming weeks, so look out for a full report in the next month.
