Kask Mojito helmet

It may be a five years old, but the Kask Mojito is still one of our all-round favourite helmets

Given it was first launched in 2012, you may wonder why the Kask Mojito helmet features in our pick of the 100 top products in road cycling for 2017. Technology has moved on, and with it helmet design, but the Mojito remains a lightweight, super-comfy and great-looking lid.

The Mojito was Team Sky’s helmet of choice from its launch until 2014, and as such was perched on the heads of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome when they crossed the Champs-Elysees finishing line as Tour de France champions in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

But what was once a pro-level helmet, offering superb ventilation and a great low weight, now sits roughly in the middle of the Kask range at £110. You still get pro-worthy performance, but you don’t have to pay a premium for it.

Team Sky have moved on to the Kask Protone, which adds more aerodynamic flair, while other brands have started implementing MIPS safety technology, but if you just want a comfortable, well-vented helmet for clocking long miles with the sun on your back, you will still struggle to beat the Mojito.

You get 26 vents, which ensures plenty of airflow through the helmet, while the ‘Up & Down’ fit system provides a precise, comfortable and adjustable fit. Turn the dial at the back of the lid and it pulls the internal frame towards your head for a fit which gently cradles your noggin. As the name suggests, you can also adjust the cradle vertically, helping the lid to remain secure on all levels.

Aerodynamically the Mojito struggles in comparison to more dedicated aero lids – hence being topped by the Protone in the Kask line-up – but Kask say they have still placed the vents to ensure the helmet isn’t a complete parachute. Anyway, unless you’re chasing every marginal gain, there’s not much to be concerned about here.

What you will notice, however, is the excellent ventilation and superb comfort which ensure the Kask Mojito is still one of our go-to helmets some five years after it was first launched.
