Lake 2014 road shoes – first look

Plus new lights from Knog and tools by Super B

Lake have three new high-end shoes in their range for 2014, including the top-of-the-range CX402.

We checked out the new footwear at the dealer shoe of Lake’s UK distributor, Moore Large, where we’ve already brought you news of Moda Bikes’ UK-made carbon fibre frame and an updated line-up of American Classics wheels which includes their first-ever carbon clincher.

The CX402 is Lake’s new flagship shoe

Back to shoes, though, and the CX402 is made from Lake’s premium K-Lite kangaroo leather, which is both supple and, according to Lake, the most durable and lightest leather available. It’s anti-bacterial, too.

The leather outer is heavily perforated and the tongue made from mesh in order to provide plenty of ventilation in warm weather, while the carbon fibre sole is heat-mouldable.

The CX402 slots in above the CX401 and uses a double BOA closure, rather than a single BOA and velcro strap. The new shoe uses the latest version of the BOA ratchet, which has a smaller profile to save weight and improve ergonomics.

The CX401 remains in the range and is available in any number of custom designs

The CX402 comes in white or black, with a three-bolt or Speedplay compatible sole, and in sizes 39 to 50, for £369.99. A wide fit option is also available in sizes 42 to 50.

While the CX402 is Lake’s flagship shoe, the CX401 continues to be the company’s most expensive road slipper at £399.99, thanks to the fact it’s available in any number of custom designs based around in eight colours, including the Union Jack option pictured above.

The CX237 is a new shoe and we love it’s sleek, understated styling

The CX331 (£269.99) also remains in the range and sits above two other new models: the CX237 (£209.99) and CX217 (£169.99).

The CX237 is a stylish shoe with a sleek, understated design which combines a full grain leather upper with a double BOA closure and carbon fibre sole. It comes in white and black, in sizes 39 to 50, while a ladies option is also available in white, in sizes 37 to 42.

The new CX217 looks to combine performance and affordability

The CX217, on the other hand, seeks to combine performance with value and, as a result, uses a more affordable leather than the CX237, without, Lake say, unduly compromising breathability and durability.

Mesh inserts and a perforated upper help keeps things cool, while there’s a single BOA closure and the same 100 per cent carbon fibre sole as the CX237. The CX217 is available in white only, in sizes 39 to 50, as well as a ladies fit, in sizes 37 to 42.

New lights from Knog and tools from Super B

Moore Large also look after Knog and Super B, so we took the chance to see what’s new from the two brands.

The Knog Arc 5.5 has a claimed output of 550 lumens

First up, Knog have revealed their most powerful light to date, with the Arc 5.5 emitting a claimed 550 Lumens from one Cree XM-L2 LED.

The light has a tool-free mount which is a doddle to use, as we’ve come to expect from Knog, and is USB rechargeable. It has four modes – high, medium, low and flashing – with claimed run times of 90 minutes on high to 12 hours on flashing. The new lights costs £91.99 and is also available in a smaller, 170-lumen version (the Arc 1.7) for £51.99.

Super B’s range of tools is extensive

Finally, Super B is a Taiwanese tool manufacturer new to the UK. It may be a new name but Super B have been making bike tools for more than ten years and the range is extensive. It’s split into two collections – Classic and Premium – according to price, covering every tool you’re likely to need.
