Time have updated their range of road pedals, replacing the iClic2 with the Xpresso – touted as “the fastest pedal ever invented”.
It’s evolution, rather than revolution, as far as the Xpresso is concerned, with the new system retaining many of the features of the iClic2.
The innovative iClic retention mechanism, which holds the rear gate partially open after release for easier re-entry, remains, and the cleat is the same design as the current range.
The key design change is the oversized 700 mm² (previously 445mm²) pedal platform, which Time say should make for better power transfer and improved comfort, while here’s also a stainless steel wear plate to address the durability issues concerned with the original iClic pedals.
Time have also managed to drop the weight of the pedals, with the top-end titanium-axled model a claimed 155g for a pair. The use of a carbon flexion blade instead of the traditional metal spring allows for the pedals to be so impressively light. The pedal offers +/-5° of angular float and 2.5mm of lateral float, with the release angle set at 15°
Five pedals make up the Xpresso range: the Xpresso 12 Titan Carbon (£224.99, 155g), Xpresso 8 Carbon (£124.99, 195g), Xpresso 6 (£84.99, 205g), Xpresso 4 (£59.99, 224g) and Xpresso 2 (£42.99, 220g).
The top-of-the-range Xpresso 12 Titan Carbon has a titanium axle and carbon fibre body, while the Xpresso 8 Carbon has a steel axle and carbon body. The Xpresso 6, 4 and 2 have a steel axle and composite body.
The pedals are available now from Time retailers and we have put our name on the list for a pair to test. The existing iClic2 and RXS pedals will continue to remain in the 2013 range.
