Mark Cavendish selected for Rio 2016 Olympics

Manxman set to ride omnium; Chris Froome and Lizzie Armitstead head up road teams

Mark Cavendish will bid to end his hunt for an Olympic medal in Rio this summer, after being selected as part of Great Britain’s men’s track team for the Games.

Cavendish’s place in the squad for Rio 2016 was confirmed by British Cycling today, with the world Madison champion set to compete in the omnium, which he finished sixth in at the World Track Championships.

Cavendish joins Sir Bradley Wiggins in the five-strong track endurance squad, with 2012 team pursuit champion Ed Clancy and Steven Burke and Team Sky-bound Owain Doull also picked.

And Cavendish is relishing the opportunity to add one of the few missing pieces to his palmares in the summer.

“I’ve made no secret that my aim is to win an Olympic medal and I’m so pleased to have been given this opportunity,” he said.

“It’s always a proud moment to be able to pull on a GB jersey and to be able to do so at the Olympic Games is extra special.

“I’ve given my all to training these past few months and I’m committed to doing my absolute best out in Rio.”

It means no place for Andy Tennant, who missed out on a medal at London 2012 as the unused fifth man in the team pursuit squad who smashed the world record on their way to a gold medal.

Jon Dibben, the world points race champion, also misses out having been hampered by a fractured left elbow suffered at the ZLM Roompot tour.

On the road, Great Britain’s quintet consists of four Team Sky riders with Chris Froome spearheading the bid for gold in the hilly time trial and road races.

Welshman Geraint Thomas, a team pursuit gold medallist in 2008 and 2012 on the track, is also selected, alongside Manxman Peter Kennaugh, who was also part of the gold medal-winning team pursuit squad in London four years ago.

Ian Stannard is the fourth Team Sky man selected, with Bury-born Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) completing the line-up.

Four of the five will be in action at the Tour de France with only Kennaugh, who is recovering from a fractured collarbone, missing next month’s race.

Women’s world champion Lizzie Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans), a silver medallist four years ago, heads the women’s road team, meanwhile.

Boels-Dolmans team-mate Nikki Harris, the former British ‘cross champion, is also selected alongside veteran Emma Pooley, who came out of retirement earlier this season with the aim of riding the hilly time trial course in Rio.

On selection, Armitstead said: “It’s an honour to have been selected to represent Team GB in Rio for my second Olympic Games.

“London 2012 was a fantastic event and remains one of my career highlights. I’m looking forward to doing it all over again, and hopefully going one better, in Rio this summer.”

Pooley’s selection means Dani King – a team pursuit gold medallist at London 2012 – misses out, but her former track team-mates Laura Trott and Jo Rowsell Shand are selected for the women’s track endurance squad.

Fit-again Katie Archibald, who missed the World Championships after injuring herself in a motorbike accident, is also selected alongside Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne.

Becky James and Katy Marchant will ride the women’s track sprint events – meaning no Jessica Varnish, as was expected, and Jason Kenny, Phillip Hindes and Callum Skinner make up the men’s track sprint squad, with youngster Ryan Owens travelling as a reserve.

The cycling squad is completed by men’s BMX stars Liam Phillips and Kyle Evans.

Team GB’s chef de mission, Mark England said: “The fantastic performances our cyclists delivered at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games cemented the sport’s place as one of our most successful in modern times and it’s great to be able to welcome another strong squad to Team GB.

“The mix of Olympic, world and Tour de France champions alongside talented debutants is enormously exciting.

“In the build-up to Rio 2016 the team have shown great form across all three of the disciplines and will no doubt be looking to continue this at the Olympic Games this summer.”
