Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins win world Madison gold

Laura Trott reclaims omnium title as Great Britain close out 2016 Track Worlds in style

Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins wound the clock back to claim gold in the Madison as Great Britain topped the medal table at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Cavendish finished sixth in the six-event omnium – won by defending champion and former road team-mate Fernando Gaviria (Colombia) – to deal a blow to his hopes of competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

But the Manxman paired up with Wiggins for the Championships’ final event, and overcame a late crash to replicate the gold medal they won in Manchester in 2008.

Despite being a lap down early on, the Brits racked up the sprint victories leaving them only needing to gain a lap themselves to take a provisional lead.

And after repeated attempts by Wiggins to force the advantage, they did exactly that – a late crash for Cavendish failing to stop the Manxman collecting his third gold medal in the discipline, having also won with Rob Hayles in LA in 2005.

The result meant Great Britain finished their home World Championships with five gold medals, and nine medals in total – Laura Trott having already sealed her second gold of the event in the omnium.

Having finished inside the top three in each of the first five events, Trott went into the points race with a 12-point lead overall.

And after setting the tone by winning the first sprint, the 23-year-old comfortably defended her lead, finishing with 201 points to reclaim the rainbow jersey for the first time since 2012.

Trott wasn’t the only rider to reclaim a world title with just five months until the Rio Olympics either – fiancé Jason Kenny also proving he is bang in form with victory in the individual sprint.

The Bolton man qualified second fastest, just one-thousandth of a second behind Australia’s Matthew Glaetzer and didn’t lose a single heat as he progressed all the way to the final.

Team-mate Callum Skinner was knocked out in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 to Denis Dmitriev (Russia) in the match sprints but Kenny set up a race for gold with Glaetzer.

And though the Australian took the first heat, Kenny stormed back to win the final two and win just his third world title.

Cavendish’s main rival for a place in the omnium, Jonathan Dibben, did his hopes of a Rio place no harm either by winning the points race, while Andy Tennant defeated team-mate Owain Doull to claim bronze in the individual pursuit.

Coupled with the men’s team pursuit silver on the second day, Trott’s scratch race gold and the women’s team pursuit’s resurgent ride to claim bronze after a poor qualifying, and the Brits ensured they edged out Germany to top the medal table.
