Met Strale helmet

Met's latest aero helmet is one for the hot heads

Met’s Strale helmet is an everyday aerodynamic road helmet which won’t break the bank. It features a shell designed to smooth airflow over the top of the helmet, while also pulling it through the lid to keep the rider cool.

That effect is known as the ‘Venturi effect’, a theory which purports that air will accelerate when squeezed through a small hole. In a bike helmet, this means air can be guided into the air vents and out of the rear end, effectively dragging warm air with it, boosting cooling.

The Strale manages this despite only featuring a 14 vents – highly ventilated helmets like the Kask Mojito tend to feature more – but it’s in how they’re shaped that dictates how successful they are, with the front and side vents working in tandem with the rear openings to pull air through.

The reduced number of vents also means the outer of the helmet is kept clean and features smoothing guidelines to help shape the remaining air over the top of the lid. It’s not really an aero lid like the Lazer Bullet, also in the RCUK 100, but is certainly designed to save watts. Meanwhile, weight is kept relatively low given the price point. A medium adds only 255g of mass to your headspace, while the large weighs 290g.

RCUK 100 2017 - Met Strale helmet

Met Strale

Of course, it meets all the minimum EU, US and even the extra-stringent Australasian safety standards, which, if we’re honest, is all that really should count in what is – ostensibly – a safety device.

Throw in seven bold colourways to suit rider preference, as well as an optional Met Safe-T Duo rear light that fits over the top of the rear adjustment mechanism, it’s a lid that has us wondering, why would you spend more?
