Pinarello unveil disc-equipped Dogma 65.1 Hydro and DogmaK Hydro with SRAM Red 22

The Pinarello Dogma is the latest race bike to get disc brakes for model year 2014, with the Dogma 65.1 Hydro to use SRAM’s new hydraulic-ready Red 22 groupset.

The launch of Red 22, which also saw SRAM’s flagship groupset gain an extra sprocket, back in April has opened the door for more disc-equipped machines, with Bianchi subsequently unveiling the Oltre XR2 Disc in June.

Pinarello’s flagship bike is now available with disc brakes

SRAM Red 22 is available in three brake options: mechanical rim brakes, hydraulic rim brakes (as used by Mark Cavendish on stage one of the Tour de France) and hydraulic disc brakes.

The Dogma 65.1 Hydro gets hydraulic disc brakes so, while we won’t see it ridden by the Pinarello-sponsored Team Sky and Movistar teams at least until the UCI approves disc brakes for use in competition, it does offer consumers more stopping power than ever before.

The new machine, which gets its Hydro moniker from the name of SRAM’s hydraulic shifter, has the same geometry as the existing Dogma 65.1 Think 2 and, Pinarello say, offers an identical ride quality.

However, there’s a new fork, dubbed the Onda HD, in order to accommodate the front disc, and the chainstays have been tweaked, borrowing technology from Pinarello’s Dogma XC cross-country mountain bike. Both the front and rear brakes use 140mm rotors and all cables run internally.

Otherwise, the Dogma 65.1 Hydro is made from the same Torayca 65Ton HM 1K carbon fibre as the existing Dogma 65.1 Think 2. Other frame features include a headtube which tapers from 1-1/8″ to 1-1/2″ and, while SRAM are yet to launch an electronic groupset, the frame is compatible with both electronic and mechanical groups. The Dogma 65.1 Hydro will be available in 12 sizes.

The DogmaK Hydro is a disc-equipped version of Pinarello’s comfort bike

Meanwhile, Pinarello’s comfort bike – and the machine used by Team Sky and Movistar for the cobbled Classics – is also now available with disc brakes.

The DogmaK Hydro has a more relaxed geometry than the Dogma 65.1 Hydro, with a taller headtube and longer wheelbase designed to offer a more comfort and stability, while the frame also has clearance for wider tyres.

The DogmaK Hydro is made from the same carbon fibre as the Dogma 65.1 Hydro, and, like its racier brother, will come dressed in SRAM Red 22, with the same tapered headtube and Pinarello’s distinctive asymmetric chainstays. While the Dogma 65.1 Hydro uses an Italian threaded bottom bracket, the DogmaK Hydro, which will be offered in eight sizes, has a PressFit 30 BB.

UK prices and availability for the Dogma 65.1 Hydro and DogmaK Hydro are to be confirmed.
