Pro bike: Fabian Cancellara’s Trek Domane Classics Edition

A gladiatorial machine fit for Spartacus

Fabian Cancellara rode a Trek Domane Classics Edition fit for Spartacus to a podium finish at Paris-Roubaix on Sunday.

The Domane is Trek’s ‘endurance’ machine and uses the Wisconsin-based firm’s innovative IsoSpeed decoupler to isolate the seattube from the toptube. It acts as a pivot and allows the seattube to flex independently, thus improving the frame’s comfort without sacrificing stiffness, according to Trek.

The Domane was developed with Cancellara, who has been part of the Trek-sponsored team in its various guises since the start of 2011. The Swiss rode the Domane to victory at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in 2013, and again at the Tour of Flanders this year, before his third place finish at Paris-Roubaix on Sunday secured a remarkable 12th consecutive podium finish in cycling’s five Monument one-day races.

The Classics Edition adopts Trek’s ‘pro endurance geometry’ in order to achieve the aggressive position required by Cancellara and his Trek Factory Racing team-mates. The low-and-long frame, which is also available to the public, has a headtube which is 52mm shorter in Cancellara’s preferred 58cm frame size, compared to the regular ‘endurance’ fit offered by Trek across the rest of the Domane range, while the toptube is 9mm longer.

Cancellara’s bike also gets a custom gladiatorial paint job fit for the rider nicknamed Spartacus. Let’s take a closer look at Cancellara’s setup for Paris-Roubaix.
