Quarq DZero power meter

Quarq's new DZero range offers greater compatibility, improved accuracy and lower prices

We first saw the new and improved Quarq DZero at Eurobike 2016, with the spider-based power meter boasting claims of greater compatibility, improved accuracy and a simplified range that makes picking the right power meter easier than ever before.

To this end, Quarq have redesigned the internal electronics and strain gauges that contribute to data collection, with a variance of only 1.5 per cent. Right now, that’s about as accurate as it gets.

The circuit board redesign has seen Quarq make claims of more consistent data processing throughout the 10,000 data points, as well as improved battery life which they now say extends to 200 hours of riding time. Those 10,000 data points help to compensate for temperature changes too, so there’s no need to recalibrate the unit – a bug bear among some power meters on the market.

All the while, the DZero is able to take cadence measurements, as well as measure your left-right wattage balance, via the AxCad innovation – removing the need for a dedicated magnet to detect passages of the crank arm. Usefully, if you wanted to swap over your chainrings, it’ll automatically compensate for this without any variance in accuracy.

Compatibility is wide on all fronts, too. You can connect it via ANT+ or Bluetooth – helpful if you need to make the choice – while the bottom bracket compatibility improves over older models to include BB386EVO-standard setups. Additionally, it’s designed to work with Quarq’s Prime cranks, which will be seen more and more in the future on off-the-shelf bikes at point of purchase. If you buy a bike with a Prime crankset, you’ll just need to purchase the DZero power meter to get setup.

The DZero also makes use of the Qalvin smartphone app – Quarq calls it a “digital wrench” – through which firmware updates, battery readings, calibrations and diagnostics can be undertaken to check the status of the power meter, rendering maintaining the spider’s brains easy.

Quarq DZero

The DZero is available in a standard crank setup, with Quarq-branded ‘ExoGram’ carbon or aluminium cranks arms attached to the spider, a specific SRAM RED version (the companies are sisters), or just the spider on its own to suit your own four or five arm chainrings, with Shimano users able to use the specific DFour spider.

As a result, the Quarq DZero Power Meter is a powerful and adaptable spider-based power meter, with accuracy ratings that others can only envy given the attractive price.
