SRAM has issued a recall of more than 3,500 RED 22 and S-700  hydraulic disc brakes for road bikes.

The units recalled have serial numbers from 36T30993767 to 42T39407156, a range covering 3,553 units.

A spokesman for the American brand said he expected less than 500 units in the affected range to have been shipped to dealers or purchased by customers.

“This is a performance and safety concern,” a spokesman said. “There are no reported failures in the field.”

“We began proactive quarantine efforts with factories, bike brands and distributors last week.
We have reported this issue to the US CPSC [Consumer Product Safety Commission] and will be cooperating with the agency to announce a safety recall in the near future. We are also working with European consumer administrations.”

Owners can find the serial number on the brake caliper or the outside of the box in which they have been shipped.

SRAM had scored a significant coup in bringing its long-awaited hydraulic disc brake to market ahead of rival, Shimano, when it was launched in April, but demand has meant the units have been slow to reach the UK market.

The S-700 range includes a hydraulic disc brake and hydraulic rim brake. SRAM’s statement indicates that the the serial number of affected products can be found on “rim or disc”.

SRAM did not describe the nature of the ”performance and safety concern” in their statement, or the component that had caused it, but pledged to issue a further notice when the CPSC-approved recall begins.
