At the Core Bike Show last week we had a chance to take a close look at the most interesting pedals around at the moment, the new Time I-Clic’s. They were released at Eurobike last year but are now available through UK distributor Chicken Cycles.
Time is a company synonymous with clipless pedals and its latest development uses an interesting innovation based around a ‘carbon blade’ in place of the usual spring mechanism for engaging and disengaging cleats.
The key benefit is a far easier clip-in than with the previous and now discontinued RXS pedals. Rather cleverly a trigger holds the rear latch open so there’s very little resistance when you push the cleat in, a fact made astoundingly clear when we were given a pedal and shoe and asked, by hand, to clip-in and -out – it’s effortless.
There’s also the lack of weight due to the carbon spring, and the wide pedal provides a good platform for support. A lighter cleat, by using composite rather than brass, brings the system weight down even further. There’s still rotational and lateral float as on the RXS pedals.
Price wise the top of the tree is the £247.99 Titan Carbon which is just 179g per pair. Several models are available if you’re bulking at that price, including the entry-level I-Clic, £82.99 and 260g per pair, which trades in the carbon spring for a cheaper fibre composite.
