Twice a runner-up in previous editions of the Tour of Britain, in 2008 and 2011, Steve Cummings reached the top step of the podium for the first time to become only the second British winner of the modern race.
After a brilliant season which has brought stage wins in some of the world’s biggest races, not least both the Criterium du Dauphine and Tour de France in the summer, Cummings took control of the race on Haytor and held the yellow jersey through to London.
The Dimension Data rider could even have pulled the jersey on earlier, but was beaten to a fifth stage win of the season on stage two by Julien Vermote (Etixx-QuickStep).
When Vermote was dropped on the race’s only summit finish, however, Cummings stepped up to the plate and held off the attempts of Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing) and Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) to dethrone him.
After Edvald Boasson Hagen’s win in 2015, it is the second consecutive year Dimension Data (or MTN-Qhubeka as they were previously) have won the Tour of Britain. We’ve picked out some great photos from organisers Sweetspot, which tell the story of how Cummings did it.
