Dutch national time trial champion Wilco Kelderman got his Tour de France off to the perfect start on stage one, finishing ninth on this Bianchi Aquila CV.
That placed Kelderman as the best of the general classification contenders – but the LottoNL-Jumbo rider’s luck turned horribly on stage two.
The 24-year-old crashed and then fell on the wrong side of a split in the peloton on a day when crosswinds wreaked havoc in the Netherlands, with Kelderman losing more than five minutes to all but end his his hopes of a high GC finish.
The Tour de France is an unpredictable beast and joy can so quickly turn to despair. Kelderman must now re-calibrate his aims for the race, which will present plenty more opportunity over the remaining stages.
But, for now, let’s take a closer look at the TT machine on which Kelderman’s got his Tour off to such a promising start.
