Stifling heat and little interest from the locals… Doha 2016 was not a UCI Road World Championships without its problems.
But when the crosswinds whipped up for the men’s road race on Sunday, and Peter Sagan capped a fine year as world champion by earning himself another stint in the rainbow jersey, the action at least ensured the racing ended on a high.
Great Britain return from the Qatari desert with a silver medal in the men’s road race, though Mark Cavendish could not hide his disappointment at missing out on gold.
In the women’s road race, Lizzie Deignan’s reign as world champion ended as she was narrowly beaten to a place on the podium – Amalie Dideriksen of Denmark will wear the rainbow bands next year.
