The bone-shaking Paterberg
The bone-shaking Paterberg
On-bike videos are on the rise this season as the Velon group of 11 WorldTour teams bids to push for change at professional cycling’s top table, with the Tour of Flanders one of the first widespread tests of the initiative and several bikes armed with cameras.
The cobbled Hellingen are what the Tour of Flanders is all about, with 19 on the route in all including the Koppenberg, two ascents of the Paterberg and three passages of Oude Kwaremont.
And some of the best footage from the weekend comes from the Paterberg, courtesy of Giant-Alpecin’s Zico Waetyns.
Chasing BMC Racing’s Jean-Pierre Drucker up the ascent, the video shows just how tough the super-stuff, bone-jarring climb is. Waetyns’ hands shake on the hoods as he seeks out the best line on the climb.
And keep your eyes peeled for the Spartacus Army on the ascent, the absence of their favourite rider failing to keep the Swiss fans away from one of the races at which he has become a legend.
