They say he who dares, wins – and that was certainly the case at Sunday’s Giro di Lombardia as Vincenzo Nibali gave a descending masterclass en route to victory.

The Shark of Messinah bolted clear on the Civiglio to build up what proved to be a race-winning lead, adopting an aggressive tuck position and attacking the sweeping bends without fear.

After a few hair-raising moments, Nibali emerged from the descent with a commanding lead, which he held over the top of the final climb and into Como.
