Volta a Catalunya – stage four: report

Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp) moved into the overall lead at the Volta a Catalunya after winning the Queen Stage of the race with a daring solo ride.

The Irishman formed part of a 23-rider breakaway and stayed out front until the finish, crossing the line 36 seconds ahead of Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) on the summit finish of the Port Aine-Rialp.

Martin now leads the race by ten seconds ahead of Rodriguez, while Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who started the day in the leader’s jersey, was forced to abandon the race after crashing on a descent during the stage.

Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) finished sixth on the stage, crossing the line one minute and two seconds behind Martin, and drops to fourth overall, 36 seconds adrift of the 26-year-old.
