Nairo Quintana became the fourth different rider to pull on the red jersey at this year’s Vuelta a Espana ahead of the rest day.

The Colombian, who replaced Movistar team-mate Alejandro Valverde at the head of the race, will ride in Tuesday’s individual time trial as race leader.

How long he stays in red, however, will depend on whether he can fight off the three other riders – Valverde, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Winner Anacona (Lampre-Merida) – within ten seconds of his time overall.

And the battle for the red jersey is not the only one heating up, with the green jersey of points leader currently in the hands of John Degenkolb (Giant-Shimano) and the polka dot jersey with Lluis Mas (Caja Rural).
