Continental Grand Prix 4000S II

German giants stick with the tried and tested

Where Schwalbe have ploughed on with the development of a tubeless road tyre in the Pro One, German rival Continental have steadfastly stuck to their guns and remained loyal to the tried and tested tube/tyre setup.

Conti’s philosophy is ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and that certainly applies to the GP 4000S II. Continental’s flagship clincher appeared in the 2015 edition of the RCUK100, so why’s it here again?

Well, a great tyre remains a great tyre a year on, and in that time Continental have expanded the range from just 23 and 25mm tyres to include a 28mm option.

A great tyre remains a great tyre a year on, and in that time Continental have expanded the range from just 23mm and 25mm tyres to include a 28mm option.

It’s a smart move. Wider tyres are all the rage and, now an increasing number of frames are offering clearance for 28mm tyres, this version will appeal to riders seeking to jump on the bandwagon for fatter rubber.

It’s no fad, though, and Conti say the 28mm GP 4000S II has the lowest rolling resistance of the lot. It’s heavier than the 23mm and 25mm tyres, of course, at 260g which might irk weight weenies, but the larger chamber means you can run the 28mm at a lower pressure, which will improve comfort and contact patch.

Size aside, the GP 4000S II remains unchanged, using Conti’s superb Black Chili compound and Vectran breaker to create a tyre which is light, fast, smooth, grippy and impressively puncture resistant for a race tyre.

While the trend towards wider tyres has, naturally, seen tyre manufacturers increase the number of options available to riders, there are still relatively few genuine race tyres which have made the jump from 25 to 28mm. The Continental Grand Prix 4000S II is one of them and, as chance has it, it’s one of the best tyres around.
