SRAM issues product recall for ALL hydraulic road brakes

Riders urged to 'stop use immediately' after reported failures in US cyclo-cross races

SRAM has urged riders with a bike equipped with its hydraulic disc or hydraulic rim brakes to “stop use immediately” after issuing a full-scale product recall.

The American groupset manufacturer previously issued a limited recall relating to a specific run of Red 22 and S-700 hydraulic brakes but has upgraded the recall to include all products shipped to date. SRAM estimates 19,000 brake systems have been shipped to the global market.

SRAM has issued a full-scale product recall for its hydraulic disc and rim brake systems

“It has recently come to our attention that during last weekend’s cyclo-cross racing in the US, in sub freezing temperatures, several failures were reported,” read a SRAM statement. “In these conditions the master cylinder seals failed to hold pressure resulting in abrupt loss of brake power, and an inability to stop the bike.

“These failures are related to product that is outside the originally stated date code range and unrelated to the original failure mode. No injuries have been reported to date.”

Bike brand customers, OE factories, distributors and dealers are requested to cease all sales and shipments of SRAM Red 22 and S-700 hydraulic brakes. Additional information related to timing and replacement of product is to be confirmed.

The statement continued: “SRAM engineering and manufacturing is committed to the highest quality standards.

“On behalf of all employees at SRAM we aplogise for the disruption to our customers’ business and to individuals who have placed their trust in our products.”

Customers affected by the recall can find further information on a micro-website set up by the company via this link, which they say will be constantly updated.
