The record books will state Thomas de Gendt won stage 12 of the Tour de France at Chalet Reynard, moving into the polka dot jersey as a result, on a day in which Chris Froome remained overall leader.
But that doesn’t tell half the story of a choatic, dramatic Bastille Day stage in Provence, which saw Froome forced to run part of the way up the climb after a crash involving roadside fans and a TV moto.
The Team Sky man was eventually given the same time as Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), who he and BMC Racing’s Richie Porte had been riding away from the GC group with at the time of the incident, but not before plenty of chaos unfolded on the slopes of Ventoux.
