Michael Matthews followed Tom Dumoulin’s lead in securing his Grand Tour set – a stage victory in Revel adding to victories at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in previous years.
Returning after the 2016 Tour de France’s first rest day, Matthews got into the day’s break and then – alongside two team-mates – in the decisive seven-man move which contested the stage.
With Peter Sagan, Greg van Avermaet and Edvald Boasson Hagen also present in that move, it was a day for the rouleurs, given the race’s highest climb of this year’s edition had to be tackled at the start of the stage.
