Only Eddy Merckx now has more Tour de France career stage wins than Mark Cavendish after the resurgent Manxman sprinted to his second victory in three days.
The Dimension Data rider levelled Bernard Hinault’s tally of 28 wins at the Tour after beating Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) by little more than a tyre’s width on stage three of this year’s race.
Cavendish’s victory came at the end of a long, slow day of racing – the final flurry to the line ensuring a transition day did at least finish with a flourish and another win for the man once voted the Tour de France’s greatest sprinter – a tag he is living up to so far at the 2016 Tour.
